Sustainable Practices
Empirical Genetics is a hemp breeding company that sells hemp planting seed, and grows hemp fiber & hemp grain for food. We utilize sustainable farming practices, incorporating cattle grazing to increase soil health and biodiversity in the soil, which increases organic matter and in turn increases soil water retention. This culminates in a decreased need for added fertilizer each year and ultimately, decreasing salinity levels in the soil & water system from runoff to water ways and the water table as a whole, supporting the Colorado River Basin Salinity Control Program. We believe with the data we are in the process of collecting this year and in the future, we will be significantly impacting the high concentrations of salinity in Colorado water. Empirical Genetics primary activity is using our industrial hemp planting seed and this year's fiber crop to develop and validate our methods of carbon sequestration and the quantification of the actual CO2 sequestered from the atmosphere instead of the arbitrary equations that are currently in use. This is the proof of concept model that can be used for all other commodity crops. The same methods used to get a homogenized/representative sample of silage corn for quantification of protein has been implemented in our harvested hemp fiber and food grain sampling process for the quantification of carbon sequestered in the soil and harvested hemp crop. This is going to be done by taking the homogenized representative industrial hemp sample and conducting an Ash Test measuring Total Carbon analysis by utilizing an SH Scientific Laboratory Muffle Furnace. In addition, the furnace will be utilized to measure Total Inorganic Mineral Content in the soil. Utilizing our methods of carbon quantification, we will be producing a validated scale ticket, by measuring the carbon sequestered from the hemp at the grain elevator. By doing this we are creating a whole new category of value added to the agricultural carbon smart commodities. The current quantification utilized by carbon registry, carbon sequestration certification, and carbon sequestration programs operated by large agricultural corporations are based on inaccurate and out of date equations. These corporations are paying farmers a fraction of the value of the carbon offsets from the carbon sequestered from their land, and their opaque calculations are putting the farmers at a significant financial disadvantage. Even worse, these practices are restricting the adoption of climate smart commodities and general acceptance of the validity of carbon sequestration. This hinders the overall growth of this sector. This foundational hemp carbon sequestration information will be used as an anchor to create correlating data for quantifiable accurate carbon sequestration by cattle grazing.
